Imerys in the USA
The Sylacauga open-pit is the world’s largest working calcium carbonate mine
World-class operations serving the pharmaceuticals, filtration, polymers, ceramics and paints markets - and many more
Our performance mineral operations span the USA from coast to coast, and include several world-class deposits and facilities. Working at our Imerys Technology Center in Johns Creek, Atlanta, and hand-in-hand with customers, our mineral specialists harness the potential of the minerals they yield to design cutting-edge, often tailor-made, solutions that address the specific challenges each end industry is facing, with a focus on sustainability, innovation and supporting the circular economy.
Our Lompoc, CA operation is the biggest working diatomite mine on the planet. The state-of-the-art, dedicated diatomaceous earth (DE) facility at Lompoc produces high-purity filter aids for the biopharmaceutical and pharmaceutical industries, including blood fractionation, that have become benchmarks worldwide. DE products from Fernley (NV) and Quincy (WA) are popular for the filtration of beverages and industrial liquids, and are used in paints and as mechanical insecticides.
Our Sylacauga operation (AL) is home to the world’s largest calcium carbonate open-pit mine. Along with our Marble Hill (GA) and Whitestone (GA) operations, Sylacauga supplies ground calcium carbonates for food fortification and to enhance the performance of paints, plastics and rubber - amongst others.
Our 9 perlite facilities - which include expanded perlite and cryogenic insulation production units - produce sophisticated solutions for use in agriculture, cosmetics, construction, beverage and industrial filtration, and horticulture, including such well known brands as CynerSorb and Harborlite.
Kaolins from our Langley (SC) and Sandersville (GA) operations boost product performance and processing in a host of end applications ranging from ceramics to plastics, rubber to adhesives.
Rare ball clays from our Crenshaw (MS) and Gleason (TN) operations are highly valued ingredients in high-end sanitaryware and tableware.
Engineered wollastonites from Willsboro (NY) and micas from Kings Mountain (NC) are essential ingredients in lightweight automotive plastics and tires.
Benchmark solutions for the refractories, advanced ceramics, construction, infrastructure and metallurgy and industries
Our refractories, abrasives and construction operations serve the continent with specialty materials derived from our portfolio of andalusite, bauxite, calcium aluminate, fused alumina, mullite, fused silica and zirconia.
Our Andersonville (GA) ‘Mulcoa’ plant is the world’s largest producer of sintered mullites. They are produced from unique high-purity, refractory-grade kaolin clay from the South Georgia kaolin belt. The Mulcoa® brand name is renowned in the world of refractory alumino-silicate calcines as the benchmark for refractory production.
The Niagara Falls (NY) site has roots going back as far as 1917. Today, the facilities supply brown and white fused alumina and silicon carbides for use in a broad array of end products, such as abrasives, refractories, blasting media, investment casting and foundry applications.
Our Norfolk site on the Virginian coast specializes in the production of high-performance fused bauxite and limestone and sintered alumina and lime for use as cement, concrete and specialty binders in building, refractories, metallurgy, mining, tunneling and wastewater infrastructures. They are sold under some of our oldest and well-known brand names such as Secar®, Sewper®, Sewpercoat®, Ciment Fondu®, Fondu®, Peramin® Ternal® and Fondag®.
Our fused minerals operation at Greeneville, Tennessee, is the North American port of call for fused silica and zirconia specialty products. Fused zirconium oxide products from Greeneville are prized raw materials in refractories, technical ceramics, friction materials, ceramic membranes and foam filters and nuclear applications - and include our renowned Zionic® brand. Our fused silica grains and powders, derived from high-purity quartz, are designed for advanced ceramics, electronics, molded compound, refractory and investment casting applications. Greeneville fused silica solutions are sold under such reputed brand names as Tec-Sil® and Teco-Sphere®.
