Roofing

We provide a variety of products for roofing applications, including 
made-to-order engobes, kiln furniture for roof tiles, asphalt shingles, roofing membranes and granules.

Asphalt shingles

Asphalt shingles are the most commonly used roofing shingle due to their low cost, ease of installation and fire resistance. Before asphalt can be used in shingle production, it must be softened via an oxidation process where air and catalysts are blown through the hot asphalt mixture. Our ground limestone is pre-heated and added to blown asphalt to improve the final product durability and resistance to fire and weather.

Roofing membranes

Roofing membranes are layered underneath asphalt shingles, their primary purpose is to exclude moisture. Mica is used for its high aspect ratio, which improves barrier properties. Carbonate is used as a functional filler.

Ceramic coated roofing granules

Ceramic coated roofing granules are an integral building block and key to long-lasting protection of an asphalt roofing shingle design. They need to be produced to offer extreme durability, able to survive harsh weather, with the expectation to maintain an aesthetically pleasing appearance over many years. Our highly engineered Imerys ceramic minerals provide that long-lasting coating of high-quality performance required in a ceramic roofing granule for the asphalt shingle manufacturer. Imerys’ high-purity kaolinite offers exceptional brightness to provide beautiful and consistent roofing shingle granule base coating colors. Our kaolin provides the necessary particle size distribution for coating characteristics to maximize solar reflectivity, which can help lower roof temperatures leading to less heat absorbed into the home and the prevention of premature aging of the roofing shingle itself. Our ball clay mineral also provides similar coating characteristics, but as a more cost effective alternative than with kaolinite - although with a slightly lower brightness.

Engobes

Engobes are a mixture of minerals applied to a roof tile before glazing for decoration and to make the tile more weather resistant. We provide a wide variety of colors with either matt or brilliant finishes that enable producers to customize their roof tiles, or even imitate the patina of old weathered roof tiles, which can take years to develop naturally. We have over 100 engobe references, designed each made-to-order for every customer.
Our roof tile engobes maintain their color stability through every production batch and have precise control of the aspect and viscosity of liquid products. Our very high-grade and  long-lasting engobes ensure producers against cracking and spotting.
