Barrier properties
We have a range of minerals that reduce the permeability of plastics for films and packaging, biopolymers, recycled plastics and wood-plastic composite.
No barrier to your success
If you’re manufacturing polyolefin film for food packaging, injection molded and blow-molded packaging, agricultural film for greenhouse applications, biodegradable film or numerous other biopolymers and wood-plastic composites, your finished products need an effective barrier against air and liquid transmissions.
Highly lamellar minerals such as talc* and mica create an effective barrier in plastics compounds, giving different performances depending on their aspect ratio, particle orientation and their mineral addition rate.
Our talc and mica products improve the oxygen barrier performance of linear low-density polyethylene films. Depending on the thickness of the film you’re working with, choose either our Suzorite® mica product or HAR® and Jetfine® talc products for enhancing barrier properties in plastic film applications.
Imerys highly lamellar minerals are particularly recommended for improving barrier properties in:
- Polyolefin film for food packaging applications
- Injection molded and blow-molded packaging
- LDPE / EVA agricultural film used for greenhouse applications
- Biodegradable film
- Biopolymers and recycled plastics
- Wood-plastic composites
