Wollastonite for ceramics

A cost-effective mineral-based solution that makes an excellent fluxing agent or frit for traditional ceramic green bodies, glazes and engobes.
Bathroom

One mineral – so many advantages for ceramics

Wollastonites for green bodies are excellent reinforcing and fluxing agents in ceramic green bodies, as well as offering a huge array of benefits to glazes and engobes. Our wollastonites make excellent, cost-effective solutions for traditional ceramics such as floor and wall tiles, large surfaces, sanitaryware and tableware.

Imerys wollastonites used in your ceramics:

  • Reduce firing shrinkage
  • Increase green and fired toughness
  • Enhance impact strength
  • Improve thermal stability preventing thermal shock
  • Speed up drying times

Our wollastonites contribute quicklime (calcium oxide) to the ceramic formula without outgassing, allowing you to reduce firing temperatures and cycles compared to traditional materials, generating cost savings and lowering CO2 emissions.

For a natural frit additive in glazes, our wollastonites are also ideal, acting as fluxing agents to improve the durability and surface appearance of the glaze.

In glazes, Imerys wollastonites:

  • Improve surface smoothness and transparency
  • Improve glaze finish, reducing pinholes, crazing and cracking
  • Improve thermal stability
  • Lower thermal expansion
  • Reduce vitrification temperature
  • Maintain high brightness value during firing
  • Generate lower CO2 emissions compared to traditional materials

Try them for satin, matt and rustic glazes. Replacing calcium carbonate with wollastonite in sanitaryware glazes can also eliminate glaze crazing completely.

Used in engobes, Imerys wollastonites:

  • Improve whiteness
  • Lower opacifier demand
  • Prevent crawling (drying cracks)
  • Lower thermal expansion

We mine and process wollastonite for all these ceramics applications at our operations in the United States and Mexico.

Imerys wollastonite main products

Nyad® M200

Nyad M200 is a high purity, coarse wollastonite recommended for ceramic glazes.

Nyad® M325

Nyad M325 is a specialty mineral to improve the strength and surface appearance of traditional glazes.

Nyad® 325

Nyad 325 is a high purity fine wollastonite from our Willsboro, NY facility recommended for ceramic glaze applications.

Ultrafibe® M20

Ultrafibe M20 is a high purity, high aspect ratio wollastonite recommended for traditional ceramic formulations to replace calcium carbonate and/or silica. It will increase the green and fired impact strength, reduce shrinkage, reduce drying time, and reduce vitrification temperature.

Nyad® M200

Nyad M200 is a high purity, coarse wollastonite recommended for ceramic bodies and glazes. The high purity combined with a low loss on ignition enables glaze formation with reduced defects, improved thermal stability and lower coefficient of thermal expansion while maintaining high fired brightness.
