Harborlite: Highly effective perlite filtration media

What is Harborlite?

Imerys Harborlite perlite is an innovative filtration solution derived from a unique amorphous mineral, specifically fused sodium, potassium, and aluminum silicate. In its natural state, perlite is a dense, glassy rock formed from volcanic activity. When processed under controlled conditions, this mineral expands significantly—up to 20 times its original volume—creating a highly effective filter media that excels in solid/liquid separation applications.

Benefits of Imerys Harborlite perlite for filtration

Imerys Harborlite perlite offers an effortless transition for users looking to switch their current filtration media. Our perlite filter aids integrate seamlessly into both pressure and vacuum filtration systems without compromising performance or efficiency.

Perlite is naturally inert, so no tastes, colors, or odors are transferred to the filtered product.  This is especially important for food applications.

Imerys Harborlite Perlite filter aids can weigh up to 50% less than traditional filtration media. This lower weight enhances ease of handling and contributes to safer operations during filtration processes.

Our perlite filter aid grades offer a density advantage of 20% to 50% over other filter aids, resulting in enhanced filtration efficiency and lower operational costs.

Unlike some filter aids, Imerys Harborlite perlite maintains its porosity at the end of the filtration process, ensuring that filter cakes do not compact and remain effective over time.

  • High-efficiency filtration – Consistent flow rates, excellent retention, and clarity.
  • Food- and Pharma-grade certified – Chemically inert, safe, and non-toxic.

Perlite manufacturing network

Imerys Harborlite perlite is mined from premium deposits in the United States. The ore undergoes meticulous milling before being shipped to one of our six processing plants across North America. When our granular perlite is subjected to temperatures between 1,600°F and 2,400°F, it expands explosively, creating low-density, multicellular particles ideal for filtration. Our network of expansion plants can readily manufacture any filter aid grade, with operations strategically located a short distance from filtration customers in most industrial regions.

Tailored solutions for diverse applications

Imerys Harborlite Perlite is designed to meet the diverse filtration needs of various industries and applications.  Our Harborlite product range is finely turned to ensure optimal particle size distribution and tailored porosity to suit specific applications.
