Linerfil™: Saving Energy in Paper-MakingExtensive technical work is being done to replace paper fiber with inexpensive pigments in a range of paper and packaging grades. The packaging market currently makes little use of minerals and is likely to grow more than printing and writing paper in the coming years. New pigment grades are therefore being developed to meet the needs of this promising sector. After LinerMAX™ in 2010, Linerfil™ was introduced in 2011 and is targeting the Kraft liner Board & Packaging segment. This very coarse kaolin can be added to linerboard with no drop in strength and some significant gains in plant efficiency: the minerals retain less water than fiber, so the drying process is quicker and less energy-intensive. Moreover with the careful selection of the clay, no chemical pre-treatment is needed.
