United Kingdom - Imerys Minerals Ltd opened its doors to the public on European Minerals DayTo strengthen its relationship with the surrounding communities, Imerys Mineral Ltd took the opportunity of celebrating Minerals Day to invite them to visit the Wheal Martyn China Clay Country Park and explore the kaolin industry.
Following two previous successful Mineral Days in 2007 and 2009, Imerys Minerals Ltd’s Cornwall and Devon Kaolin operations decided on May 2011 to open their doors to the general public to sustain close and effective communication with the communities.
After a first stage of planning for the European Minerals Day during which Imerys personnel prepared to stage the event, the initiative finally took place in the China Clay Country Park
- The first part of the day was devoted to presentations about Kaolin operations, environment, health and safety, geotechnics and the “Eco-town” under development in Cornwall’s clay country. Different equipment including microscopes, booklets, and presentation materials were used to present the information.
- Then visitors were able to tour around the sites and see a working china clay pit and a restored tip.
- Finally the public had access to the Park’s facilities including old kaolin artefacts, machinery, buildings and nature trails, to learn more about the China Clay industry, its history, modern operating processes and how sites are restored and regenerated.
Around 300 people attended the event, including pupils from five schools, local councillors and media, all of whom gave positive feedback about the day.
